Palembang is the capital of South Sumatra province in Indonesia. It is located on the Musi River, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the Strait of Malacca. The city has a population of 1,7 million people and is the second-largest city in Sumatra after Medan.
The Palembang area was known in ancient times as the Kedukan Bukit region. Palembang was an important commercial city in the second century. The Srivijaya empire was based in Palembang from the seventh to the thirteenth century. The city is home to the Palembang Sultanate, the oldest royal house in Sumatra.
The Palembang Sultanate was founded in the eighteenth century. The sultanate reached its peak in the nineteenth century, when it controlled the entire south Sumatra region. The sultanate declined in the twentieth century, and is now a constitutional monarchy.
