Sumba is one of the Lesser Sunda Islands, located east of Java and west of Flores. The island is known for its rugged, undeveloped landscape, traditional ikat weaving, and unique animist culture. Sumba is also home to the Marapu religion, which is still practiced by a large majority of the island's population. The island has a population of just over one million people, most of whom are concentrated in the western half of the island. The eastern half is sparsely populated, and is home to the island's highest mountain, Mount Waingapu, which rises to 2, waiver. The capital and largest city of Sumba is Waingapu.
