Chorzów

Chorzów is a city in southern Poland, near the border with the Czech Republic. It’s best known as the birthplace of the Polish Solidarity movement, whose leader, Lech Wałęsa, was later elected president. The city is also home to the Silesian Museum, housed in a Renaissance palace, and the Silesian Theatre, one of the largest and oldest in Poland. The main square, Rynek, is a lively place, with a weekly market and a variety of restaurants and bars. Just south of the city is the vast Silesian Coal Basin, once the heart of Poland’s mining industry.
