Hagen is a city in western Germany, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located on the river Lenne and the hills of the Rothaargebirge. As of 30 June 2012, it had a population of 186,849.

The city of Hagen was first mentioned in a document from 823 AD as "Hagana". From 1225 to 1227, the city was ruled by the Count of Mark.

The city became a member of the Hanseatic League in the 14th century.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Hagen was the seat of the government of the Duchy of Westphalia.

During the Napoleonic period, Hagen became the capital of the arrondissement of Hagen, in the department of the Rhine.
