Artists and Spectacular Views

Explore Montmartre's artistic legacy, its iconic Sacré-Cœur Basilica, local vineyard, and vibrant squares. Experience its unique village feel within Paris.

Paris, France's capital, is a sprawling city bisected by the River Seine and known for its history, art, fashion, and gastronomy. The iconic Eiffel Tower defines the cityscape, while the broad Avenue des Champs-Élysées leads to the majestic Arc de Triomphe. Beyond these landmarks, the Louvre Museum holds countless art treasures, and the city's cafe culture offers a taste of Parisian life. The historic district of Montmartre was once the haunt of artists like Picasso and Dali, and its Sacré-Cœur Basilica provides sweeping views over the city.

Louvre Museum and Orsay Museum

For those interested in art and history, the Louvre Museum and the Musée d'Orsay should be at the top of your list. The Louvre, once a royal palace, is now home to thousands of works including the 'Mona Lisa' and 'Venus de Milo'. Across the Seine, the Orsay Museum boasts an impressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces by painters such as Monet, Van Gogh, and Renoir. The buildings themselves are architectural wonders and provide a glimpse into Paris's past.

Local Cuisine: Bistros and Pâtisseries

Parisian cuisine is a vital part of the city's charm. For an authentic local dining experience, visit traditional bistros where you can try French onion soup, escargot, and steak-frites. Pâtisseries dotted across the city offer a range of pastries like croissants and macarons. Experiencing a 'café au lait' at a sidewalk café is a simple pleasure that gives you a feel of everyday Parisian life.

Parks and Public Spaces: Luxembourg Gardens

When it's time for a break from the city's hustle, head over to the Luxembourg Gardens for a calm retreat. Here, you can enjoy beautifully manicured lawns, fountains, and statues. The park also hosts activities like chess, tennis, and remote-controlled boating, making it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists looking to relax.

Shopping Districts: Le Marais

If shopping is what you're after, Le Marais offers a mix of vintage shops, traditional Jewish bakeries, and fashionable boutiques. This historic district combines old-world charm with modern-day shopping experiences. On Sundays when most of the city is quiet, Le Marais buzzes with life as shops stay open and the area’s vibrant street life takes center stage.

Accessibility and Public Transportation: Métro and Bicycles

Getting around Paris is relatively easy thanks to its extensive public transportation system. The Métro has 16 lines that connect all corners of the city. For a more scenic route, grab a Vélib’ bicycle from one of the many rental stations. Not only is biking a great way to see the city at your own pace, but it also provides flexibility to explore areas not directly accessible by train.

Day Trip: Palace of Versailles

Consider allocating a day to visit the Palace of Versailles, located just outside of Paris. This grand château with its Hall of Mirrors and extensive gardens represents the opulence of French monarchy. It can be reached by train from central Paris, providing an easy escape from the city for a day immersed in French history and royal grandeur.

Nightlife: Oberkampf District

As night falls, explore Paris's dynamic nightlife. The Oberkampf district comes alive with an array of bars and clubs that cater to all tastes. Whether you're interested in live music, DJ sets or simply enjoying a drink with the locals, this area offers an authentic Parisian night out.

Accommodations: Le Quartier Latin

For where to stay, Le Quartier Latin is a good choice for its central location and range of accommodations catering to different budgets. Besides offering easy access to major attractions, this lively area is filled with cafes, bookshops, and it borders the Seine, making it ideal for evening strolls.

By weaving through these aspects of Parisian life—art, cuisine, nature, shopping, transportation and beyond—you'll gain a multifaceted understanding of what makes this city so captivating. Whether indulging in its cultural offerings or simply soaking up the unique ambiance on the streets of Paris, there's something here for every traveler.

I LOVED Paris! I wasn't sure initially if I would as I imagined it was going to be very touristy and not as impressive as many of us imagine. I was surprised!

I found people to be very friendly! Even I was sitting on a bench and an older French lady walked past and told me I was beautiful. That's not something "rude" people would do. I even lost my phone (it fell off my bike) and a French local tracked me down and gave me back my phone. Crazy!

I also made an effort to use my limited French vocabulary and I think it went a long way in making people be friendly.

My days there were spent cycling around the city, eating croissants and macaroons, and walking through gardens and seeing the major tourist sites from the outside.

The cakes I tried here were heavenly good tho I was not impressed much by the other food.
The city was both full of romance and fashion vibe. I also like their beautiful architectures. Unfortunately that I haven't got a chance to climb to Eiffel tower yet. It was close in the public holiday when I was there
Just one minus thing is I felt like it was not safe to be on the street at night outside the city center and seemed like the Parisian looked not friendly to me :)

As it's Paris, be prepared to spend half your net worth on a coffee. But, the monuments, museums, and historical value is better here than almost anywhere else in the world.

Went in 2019 with my two close friends. We ended up renting an Airbnb which was in one of the not so safe neighbourhoods with lots of tents on the streets and people showering outside. It was quite a culture shock. We wandered the streets and saw some of the key monuments.

I loved being part of a service at Sacre Ceur where everyone sang hymns. I think we all loved parks and long walks past Seine the most. We also enjoyed the Shakespeare and co. bookshop by the now burnt down Notre Damme and all the food we had there was delicious.

The Eiffel Tower was surrounded by heavily armed men which was another culture shock for us. The crowds of tourists and people selling ugly trinkets were difficult to deal with and made us not want to see the most well known places.

Some protests were always taking place around and we weren't able to visit everything we wanted because of them. Probably the least safe I ever felt in a major European city.

Paris was nice. Large city, diverse population, good train system. Lots of diverse food to choose from. I was shocked to find a Chinatown. Lots of Africans and Arabs, I didn't really see a lot of Europeans except in the tourist areas. I'm not sure how the segregation goes there and where everyone lives. Homelessness, drunk people on the train, immigrants selling things in front of the Eiffel Tower. I think the social issues reminded me too much of the US, it wasn't a romantic perfect place like expected lol. I guess it's just another large city with too much hype and not enough focus on the reality. If you're used to large cities you'll be fine. It reminded me of LA or NY lol. Pretty much the prices expected for a developed country, no real savings. Not everyone speaks English, possibly the lowest English proficiency I've experienced outside Latin America or Japan. But there are immigrants, so some speak it. Maybe learn French if you plan to stay long term lol. The most beautiful women I saw in Europe, omg. Beautiful Arabs, Africans, Carribeans, Asians, etc. Even some of the French women. Definitely worth the visit to talk with the beautiful women, but you proly need to know French lol

A great city to visit with its beautiful architecture and endless streets to wander. I like not having a plan at all when here and simply explore the city on foot after deciding on a nice neighborhood. It is also a perfect place to sit down at a corner café to just watch life in the city. Perhaps with a nice sandwich to sample some deliciously smelly cheese.

Nice food in a beautiful energetic city, what not to like!

What to do in Paris

All World Expo locations since 1851

Article from November 2024 with 23 places

Paris, the famed capital of France, has held the distinguished honor of hosting the World Expo a record six times. Beginning with the inaugural event in 1855, the city welcomed the world again in 1867, 1878, 1889, 1900, and most recently in 1937. Each Expo has left its own distinctive mark on the city's tapestry, contributing to its global reputation as a hub for culture, innovation, and cosmopolitan living.

The first Expo in 1855 set the stage for what was to become a tradition of grand international exhibitions. Held at the Palais de l'Industrie, it was a spectacle of industrial achievement, drawing attention to Paris's progressive attitude. The 1867 edition took place on the Champ de Mars, featuring a vast central pavilion, an architectural feat that drew praise and wonder.

The third Parisian Expo in 1878 was noted for its focus on fine arts and machinery, its remarkable showcase was the head of the Statue of Liberty, a gift to the United States before it was shipped across the Atlantic Ocean. However, the 1889 Expo is perhaps the most famous for unveiling the Eiffel Tower, now an iconic symbol of Paris. In 1900, the Expo introduced the world to the Petit Palais and Grand Palais, two monumental buildings that continue to grace the cityscape.

The last Parisian Expo in 1937 was a testament to the role of art and technology in modern society. It featured two rival pavilions from Germany and the Soviet Union, each representing their nation's ideological stance.

Killing Eve filming locations

Article from May 2024 with 13 places

Paris plays a significant role in Killing Eve as the backdrop for several key scenes, and Villanelles home in the first series. The French capital is known for its iconic landmarks, charming cafes, and rich history. In the show, Villanelle's luxurious Parisian apartment is located in Place Vendôme, a square famous for its high-end jewelry stores and the Ritz Paris hotel. The square's opulent architecture and upscale atmosphere perfectly fit Villanelle's extravagant lifestyle.

One of the most memorable scenes takes place at the Père Lachaise Cemetery, the largest cemetery in Paris and the final resting place of many famous figures like Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde. The cemetery's winding paths and old tombstones create an eerie atmosphere for the scene where Villanelle and Konstantin meet.

Café de Flore, a legendary Left Bank cafe known for its intellectual clientele and appearance in many films. It's here where Eve and Villanelle have a tense encounter, adding to the cafe's cinematic history.
