Porto is one of the oldest European cities, founded by the Celts in the 4th century BC. It’s also one of the most beautiful, with a dramatic location on the Douro River estuary, flanked by hillsides covered in terraced vineyards. The city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crammed with grandiose Baroque and Romanesque buildings. The Ribeira district, on the banks of the river, is a hive of activity, with narrow streets winding down to the water’s edge. There’s a lively nightlife, with plenty of bars and restaurants, and Porto is also a great place to buy wine, with many local producers.
