Malmö in southern Sweden is known for its multicultural atmosphere and innovative architecture, like the Turning Torso skyscraper that spirals towards the sky. It's connected to Copenhagen in Denmark by the Öresund Bridge. The city's parks, such as Kungsparken, offer green spaces, while the Malmö Castle, built in the 15th century, serves as a reminder of the city's historical significance.

Malmö Castle and Historical Landmarks

Malmö, steeped in history, offers sights like the Malmö Castle, a fortified structure from the 15th century that provides insight into Sweden's past. Nearby, you can find the Malmöhus Castle, which now hosts the Malmö Museum. These historic sites are not only symbols of the city’s rich past but also provide an educational experience. The St. Petri Church, dating back to the 14th century, is another historical site worth visiting for its Gothic architecture and role in the city's religious history.

Traditional Swedish Cuisine

Those interested in culinary delights will find Malmö to be a haven for Swedish cuisine. Restaurants such as Smak and Bastard offer traditional dishes with a modern twist. Visitors can sample local specialties like herring, meatballs, and kanelbullar (Swedish cinnamon buns). For a more casual dining experience, the food stalls at Malmö Saluhall provide a variety of options in a vibrant market atmosphere.

Attractions and Must-Visit Sites

Turning Torso

You cannot miss seeing the Turning Torso when in Malmö, a marvel of modern engineering and the tallest building in Scandinavia. While the interior of the building is not accessible to the public, its impressive structure designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava is a sight to behold from the outside.

Kungsparken and Slottsträdgården

Take a break from urban exploration by visiting Kungsparken or Slottsträdgården, green havens ideal for relaxation or enjoying a picnic. Engage with local flora at the Slottsträdgården greenhouse complex or take leisurely strolls along the picturesque park paths.

Parks and Natural Spaces

Aside from Kungsparken, Pildammsparken is another expansive park that offers a tranquil escape with its large ponds and abundant birdlife. It is an ideal spot for jogging and cycling or simply enjoying nature within the city’s limits.

Getting Around Malmö

Getting around Malmö is convenient thanks to its efficient public transportation system, which includes buses and trains. Bicycle rentals are popular among locals and tourists alike for their ease of navigation through the city's extensive network of bike lanes. It is the capital city of the county of Scania. In comparison to Copenhagen, which is located just 20 minutes away, this Scandinavian city is primarily a retirement destination, offering a limited range of entertainment options. The city's two distinct areas, historical and modern, reflect a unique blend of architectural styles. The Torso district and its surrounding area provide an exemplar of a variety of contemporary architectural designs, while the older residential areas demonstrate the traditional Scandinavian architectural style. Moreover, the concept of miniskirts contributes a distinctive ambience when integrated with the actual miniskirts and renowned Swedish women. Notwithstanding the dearth of widespread adherence to the institution of marriage, cohabitation is a more prevalent phenomenon. In terms of leisure activities, the preferred destinations are Copenhagen or Lund, which is located just 15 minutes away. Furthermore, the Øresund Bridge, which was constructed with meticulous engineering details, constitutes a notable attraction.

Malmö is a nice city with a quite different vibe from Stockholm and Gothenburg. I enjoy that it feels more relaxed and that there are a bunch of restaurants from all over the world. I am not completely in love with the place like some of my friends. For a nicer and larger international city, I prefer crossing the bridge to Copenhagen, and for a mid-sized Swedish city, I actually prefer Helsingborg a little further north.

The parks are great, the food selection more interesting than in most of Sweden, and you can't argue that you find delicious falafels here. On a nice sunny day is a great place to just hang out and have a beer at an outdoor pub or to enjoy authentic Cantonese cuisine at Köket LU.
