Rome, the heart of Italy and a city that echoes the grandeur of the Roman Empire, is often mistaken for a city of ruins and ancient relics alone. However, Rome is a complex tapestry woven with diverse strands of history, culture, and culinary delights.

The cityscape of Rome is an open-air museum; the Roman Forum and the Colosseum narrate the tales of the mighty Roman Empire. Yet, it is not just about the remnants of a glorious past. Here, you will find a dynamic city life with streets lined with cafes serving 'cappuccino' and 'cornetto' - the traditional Roman breakfast.

The locals, or 'Romani' as they are known, take pride in their heritage. They have a tradition of greeting visitors with warmth and are known to engage in friendly exchanges about their city's history.

The Vatican City, an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, is a focal point for Catholic pilgrims from around the world. With St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, it is an abode of religion and art, attracting millions of visitors each year.

Rome's culinary scene is another of its defining features. From 'pizza al taglio' sold in small storefronts to 'gelato' shops that offer myriad flavours, Rome is a delight for gastronomes.

Rome was great atmosphere, i loved the food, drinks and the buzzing tourism and culture of the locals. I think it is not as expensive as people make it out to be, most other cities in italia are more expensive.

Rome is one of my favorite cities in Italy. It has a nice welcoming vibe to it that makes the city feel safe, even at night near the train station, especially compared to other Italian cities.

Rome was very underwhelming for me. I didn't really enjoy it. I spent about 5 days there and I covered A LOT of ground. I think I walked about 25 miles one of the days... It was a long one.

I saw all the major sites but it didn't feel very magical. I mean my heart dropped a little bit when I saw the Colosseum but visiting the Trevi Fountain was a mess. It was consumed by tourists and selfie sticks and it was not enjoyable.

However, I made friends with people at the hostel I was staying in (I was traveling solo) and they made it a lot more fun. We had a picnic in a grassy spot by the Colosseum one evening was returned to the Trevi Fountain past midnight when there was no one else but a couple cuddled up close together. That felt much more like the Rome I had envisioned.

Would I return? Sure. Am I in a rush? No.

Stunning, literally amazing! The food, the sights, the people... only downside is having to pay for all bathrooms, and rarely find a public trash can.

Rome was amazing. It is my favorite city in the world, the food is sooo good and the places you can see, I mean coliseum for example and the houses were also really beautiful. If you haven’t been there yet you have to go there.

Rome was great! I loved exploring it on foot with no real plan, just to see it and taste all the delicious dishes that seem to be everywhere. Sure, it gets crowded with tourists at that fountain, and the Vatican and the Colosseum. But at least the last two are still worth it.

We stayed at an Airbnb a bit outside the main touristy spots close to the Re di Roma metro stop, and the neighborhood everything that I needed; a streetside café with older Italian men happily arguing with each other for an eternity while having their morning coffee, a gelato shop that stayed open until midnight, and a small restaurant that had just opened that served what must be the best tiramisu in the world.

Sadly I saw that it had permanently closed now, but I am up for the challenge of finding a decent contender on my next visit!

What to do in Rome

Killing Eve filming locations

Article from May 2024 with 13 places

The capital of Italy is featured in Killing Eve as the backdrop for intense encounters between Eve and Villanelle. Key scenes were filmed at the Piazza Navona with its famous Fountain of the Four Rivers, and at Palazzo Braschi, a neoclassical palace turned museum. Villanelle's apartment exterior was shot in the neighborhood of Trastevere known for its colorful buildings and lively restaurants.

When in Rome, you can retrace Eve and Villanelle's steps while taking in world-famous sights like the Vatican, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps. Eating gelato, pizza al taglio, and pasta at local trattorias is a must. For a Killing Eve-themed detour, head to Castello della Cecchignola, a medieval fortress outside the city center that served as a season 2 filming spot.

Fun fact: actress Jodie Comer, who plays Villanelle, celebrated her 26th birthday while filming in Rome.
